HIDECS 2 is a computer-aided decision-making tool developed by Christopher Alexander and Marvin L. Manheim in 1962 for the design of an agricultural village in Bhavra, India.
Drawing on “software reconstructions” and “algorithmic reenactments” methodologies, this hands-on research project revives HIDECS’ approach of analyzing “design misfits” (requirements to avoid) rather than conventional positive goals and optima. Preserving the original system’s theoretical framework, I led the product design and development of our first functional physical-digital prototype.
